3 Reasons I Love Oklahoma City

When I first moved to Oklahoma City, it wasn’t love at first site…. Mind you, I moved here in the brink of January and the start of COVID- so a warm welcome wasn’t exactly in play. Almost 2 years later, as we pack our bags to head East, I can’t help but feel bittersweet to leave this place that we have called home.

Now that I think of it, I can’t exactly pinpoint when the shift happened, but somewhere along the way OKC grew on me. Whether or not you live here or plan to visit, here are 3 reasons that made me love this homey wind stricken city.

#1 The Local Biz

Ahhh the local business community in OKC is truly something! For me, this was one of my biggest worries when I first moved here. I had built so many tightknit connections to the local spots in Jacksonville, that I felt it’d be hard to find similar places in OKC. And I’ll admit, it’s easy to compare when you first move somewhere new, but what I’ve learned in my travels is that every city has its gems. And these gems are part of the unique blueprint that make a place one-of-a-kind.

So I wanted to share just a few of my favorites with you, whether you live here or plan to visit one day- make sure to add these local stops to your list!

The Bradford House

This gorgeous boutique hotel, stole my heart. I’ve spent many mornings sipping my coffee here while basking in the lantern room. If you are visiting town- this is the place to stay! And if you are local- stop in for a bite to eat or join one of there community events. There always something exciting happening at The Bradford!

A Date with Iris

A whimsical floral shop that has everything from sassy napkins to calming crystals. Don’t let me forget the star of the show- Didi- the shop cat- who aides you with her presence as you explore the goods.

Salt & Water co

Although the store front is transitioning to an online space, this business has brought such a bright light to my experience in OKC. The tranquil atmosphere of this store- welcomes wellness on every level. And the shop owner, Chelsey, is a real OKC gem. To check out there offerings visit their online shop- some of my best skincare products have been purchased here!

#2 The land

Contrary to popular opinion, Oklahoma has such a wide array of beautiful land. If you can get past the icy winters; spring, summer, and fall are beautiful seasons to explore “the wild” in OKC. This was pictured about an hour or so away from the city in the Wichita Mountain range. Yes, there are mountains here! If you’re looking to stay more central, there are so many lovely parks and trails. My go-tos? Myriad Gardens and Edgemere Park

#3 The People

Nothing makes a place more than the people in it. As simple as that sounds- it’s the real deal.

I’ve lived in many states throughout my life, and the people here have been genuinely kind. Our neighbors, the friends we’ve met, and the people out in the community have been so warm to us. And at the end of the day that is something that will stay with me wherever I go. The genuine care of Oklahomans- who knew!? Well, now I do:)

So as we pack our final items into the U-haul, I leave feeling grateful for my time spent in the Sooner State. It’s funny how the most unexpected places are often times the best ones. Until later OKC- i’ll be seeing you again.

xoxo,

ilsa Marie
