Exploring Phoenix: My 5 Favorite Local Spots

We just got back home after spending a month in Phoenix, Arizona. We were temporary snowbirds, escaping the January blues of Oklahoma for the warmer desert terrain. During our stay, we discovered several 'home away from home' spots – the kind of places you only find when you're there for a while. Whether you're planning a visit to the Phoenix area or are a local yourself, I hope this list helps you discover a new place or two!

For Breakfast:

There is something special about handmade pan dulce, and if you are a bread lover—like me, you’ll know that there is nothing like some fresh pan dulce! Panaderia Los Jarochos is the locals' best-kept secret. Every morning, they are working on delicious handmade bread, and you really can’t go wrong with whatever you choose to take with you.

My pro tip? Get the empanada de manzana—delicioso!

To Workout:

If you are looking for a workout that will literally blow your socks off, LOOK NO FURTHER! I absolutely love going to The Underground. The owner, Stephanie, is such a fun and inspiring spin instructor who has attracted such a strong community. Spin is not something I normally practice, but this place is truly my home away from home studio! I’m telling you, this is the spot to be if you want a great workout—just be sure to reserve your bike ahead of time!

For Lunch:

This sweet neighborhood bodega is an ideal place to stop and grab a fresh lunch. They have everything from crunchy kale salads to hot rotisserie-style chicken sandwiches. It’s really a one-stop-shop kind of place; plus, they even have a curated wine corner if you want to pick out a bottle for later or enjoy an iced latte at their nice outdoor picnic tables.

To Hike:

One of our favorite areas we spent hiking this go around was the Phoenix Mountain Reserve. Within this mountain range, their are so many breathtaking trails to explore (many of which are dog friendly too)! Of course, Piestewa Peak is one of the most popular; however, this time around, we discovered the Ruth Hamilton Trail and found it to be such a peaceful hike with gorgeous views of the valley.

For Dinner:

La Locanda is our family staple, offering delicious Italian cuisine with something for everyone. We've been dining here for the past five years and enjoy it every time. Recently, we discovered that on Thursday nights, they feature live music, and this changed the game for us! Nuance Jazz and Jackie Lopez are amazing musicians, creating the best evenings out in Old Town Scottsdale.

Music, vino, and pasta? What more could you want!
