A Sweet Surprise

What I thought would be a blog post about my recent trip to ATX is actually going to be me sharing a rather intimate story about my best friend and I. So here you go!

Last Friday, Joe and I packed up our things for a weekend away to Austin, Texas. Since welcoming in Ryder Jr. the two of us honestly hadn’t had a trip alone together in quite some time, so I can admit we were eager to leave town!

The road trip to Austin, from Oklahoma city is pretty simple. You just go straight down south on I-35. There’s really no way to get lost. We made a pit stop in Fort Worth to visit family friends, and my favorite store Esther Penn. After our visit, we continued our travels down to Austin and ran into QUITE a bit of Friday afternoon traffic to say the least. Ahhh, there’s nothing like a warm welcome to ATX then a bit of roadside congestion.

Finally, around 4:45pm we arrived at our familiar hip airstream Airbnb in south Austin. I was personally fed up with being in the car and the sort of stop-and-go-traffic that I b-lined it straight to the shower to refresh.

20.. okay, 30 minutes later, I walked out of the bathroom that is detached from the airstream and saw a single red rose on the door mat. I gave a light smile, probably Joe being romantic I thought…I preceded to open the airstream door and found a trail of flowers leading the way. Jazzy music consumed the room, and I saw red roses lined all the way to the bedroom. A curtain was pulled so I couldn’t see Joe. I gave a little laugh picturing him seductively poised with a red rose in his mouth. You know what I mean! But to my surprise, he came out and walked towards me and suddenly kneeled on the ground. I wish I remember the exact phrase he said, but it all just happened in a blink of eye. Just like that my partner asked me to marry him. I’ll admit, it took me a minute or two to understand what was happening. I didn’t cry, I didn’t gasp in shock, I was simply in awe. I was in awe of this person I loved right before me asking me to be his forever. Such a bizarre thing to think about! To love another so much that words are lost. That memory is dazed. That just feelings and love remain.

So just like that, my biggest crush, my friend, my confidant of so many years, my love and I are really engaged. And to tell you the truth, I feel grateful Joe proposed in a way only we got to experience, in a place only we were present, and in a space only we know. As there’s a sense of intimacy in the unassuming ambiance of airstream kitchen- yes, in my towel robe, bun hair, and all!

And that evening, we kept it all to ourselves. We went to one of our favorite neighborhood pizzerias.

We ate on a picnic table, we drank wine from plastic cups, and we sat under hanging lights.

We didn’t tell anyone.

We wanted to cherish the moment to ourselves.

And looking back at it all, I truly couldn’t have imagined it any other way♥️
